This has got to go down in history as the most flagrant abuse of power in the last 50 years of Mississippi politics. Speaker McCoy, a man of unquestioned character, leads an obstructionist clique of power hungry House members who were, unfortunately, appointed by him to make critical decisions for the all the people of this Mississippi.
Speaker McCoy, a man who is endowed with an abundance of moral fiber, leads the Democrat Caucus in blocking legislation that is favored by Gov. Barbour, the Mississippi Senate, a large percentage of House members and quite possibly the vast majority of fellow Mississippians.
Speaker McCoy, the man who fought off the undertaker as diligently as he fights off lobbyist, holds the gavel and the gumption to make a statement that the governor shouldn’t spend money we don’t have, and then leads the charge to demand more money for more projects from funding he is complaining we don't have!
Speaker McCoy, the man of strong timber when it comes rejecting even the slightest hint of impropriety, holds the gavel and the gumption to make a statement that these bonding bills can wait till the regular session, and then holds the legislature in session another day closer to the regular session--and at the same time pads the pockets of the very same legislators who made the previous statement that this session should not be called because we shouldn’t be spending money we don’t have on a special session. Are you following this?
No wonder fellow Mississippians are ready to riot. Even if it made sense, most people would be outraged. But this is so ridiculous that even Speaker McCoy has to wonder if he got out of bed a little to early.

Paul,
First:
The liberal democrats who simply turn their heads and ignore the racist remarks about Condoleeza Rice are showing their true colors. Issues of "race" are not really about race to liberal Democrats; they're about ideology. That's why you hear people like Al Sharpton criticize presidential appointments, like he did back when President Bush first nominated Powell and Rice four years ago, saying that they're not "the right kind of minorities." The hypocrisy in the whole matter clearly displays that issues of "race" are not really about race to these hate-mongerers, but that these are issues of ideology.
Second:
Any legislator in the state of Mississippi who has any decency will give back the majority of the paycheck that he receives for this special session.
Third:
There's no legitimate reason for Governor Barbour to not put an additional tax on cigarettes. I'm not saying that a dollar increase is necessarily the right amount; I'm just saying that taxing cigarettes can do no harm whatsoever. Cigarettes are a luxury; they are not necessary for life, so people are not being compelled to pay taxes on something they must have. Cigarettes are destructive; even if the tax would reduce smoking, which I don't think it would, that results in a generally healthier populace which reduces Medicare and Medicaid money, and increases the productivity of our citizenry. Any arguments that this would hurt the economy just don't make sense. I'm a smoker, and I would pay four bucks for a pack of cigarettes. Why? Because I'm addicted! People will still buy cigarettes, even with a tax, because they are addicted.
Fourth:
It's time for those who supported John Kerry to stop whining, and I'm drawing a direct line from the presidential election to what's going on in the MS legislature. To block the passage of an economic development bill that will create jobs for Mississippians, simply as a retaliation for the humiliating loss in the presidential election, constitutes the most childish, junior-high-student-council move that I have seen in my brief 24 years. Make no mistake, this delay and grumbling and moaning wasn't about the affirmative action measures inserted at the last moment, it was about simply trying to stick it to the other side. It was about spite. Then, at the end of the whole matter, they decided that the best way to save face was to go back to the old standby of demagogues past and present: appealing to the fears and insecurities of people by invoking the all-powerful race card. My only hope is that people are smarter than that, that people realize that people like Ed Blackmon don't give a damn about the little guy, about helping the minorities who live in Madison county who don't also own mansions in Jackson and twin Bentleys.
All right, that's it. You'll hear from me again.
Also, Paul, check out the story in Friday, Nov. 19 Daily Mississippian about pornography on sale at the Ole Miss Bookstore, and the professors defending it.

Every day that I hear about Billy McCoy, my stomach aches more and more. I listen to the things that happen in the House and Senate (House mainly) and think to myself, Do these people think they are running the world or the State of Mississippi? It seems like they are so power hungry. For what? At the expense of the citizens of Mississippi. That's what. I think that they need to open their eyes and realize that they were elected to a part-time job in a small district in a small state. The only people impressed with your power and authority are the people that your deer hunt with over baited fields.

PS. Don't even get me started on what I heard the Representative say this morning. 'Even though it is a piece of crap bill with quotas, we don't think we can pass anything else, so we passed it.' That is the most coward thing I have ever heard an elected official say. You are there (during regular sessions) to stand up for what is right. Do you just quit when things don't go oyour way. In that case, I wish you would take your bat and ball and go home for good.
If I wasn't a graduate student in the Med Chem Dept. at Ole Miss, I swear to God I would run for representative and turn that place around. Those stinking rich businessmen. If Supertalk organizes a strike/sit-in/mob riot, i will be there with torch and pitchfork in hand.
Keep up the good work supertalk. i listen everyday (except to michael savage. he yells way too much and is too arrogant).
Hi Paul,
What's happened to the blog? I'd sure like to see it take off. I'm sure you are a very busy man, but this would be a great place to sound off after 9am in the mornings. I listened to the exchange between George Flaggs and Terry Burton this morning. Geez...no wonder the state is on the bottom of the totem pole. Flaggs does nothing to advance the cause of his constituents or his race...just the same ole entitlement mentality. He could use a lesson in manners as well. What are reasonable Mississippians to do?
